228 Clearing out the Self Help Books

#hourglassconversations #womenover50

We’re tired of clearing out books, especially those self-help books we’ve held onto for years? This week, we had fun with this topic and share a couple time-saving ideas.

We have a couple friends who have commented they would never buy a self-help book. We, on the other hand, have probably spent enough on these books to have bought a small car (or beautiful jewelry). Books we thought might help or improve ourselves.

Looking back, were they useful or not? Who knows? Either way, they’re no longer on our bookshelves. Self-acceptance of who we are now is so freeing! And makes getting rid of those books much easier.

Share your stories and interesting self-help book titles you once owned in the comments section below.

227 Begin a Good Habit Again

#womenover50 #hgwconversations

Are you so over winter and feeling stuck, yet being nudged by the beginnings of Spring? If so, listen to our take on beginning a “new habit” again.

Cherryll has been wanting to start something new, but talking about it did not lead to action….until it did. Nudged by a friend, she finally did it– made a decision, scheduled it and started.

Hopefully our conversation will nudge you into action to make a decision to do something you want or need to do.

Happy Lunar New Year–The Year of the Dragon! There are so many ways to begin anew, and in the middle of February we have another. Looks like a colorful, fiery and prosperous year ahead.

Need a re-boot…hopefully our light-hearted take on this traditional holiday will give you that extra boost of energy.

222 Do you like what you see in the mirror?

#hourglassconversations #womenoverfifty

“When I was around 18, I looked in the mirror and said, ‘You’re either going to love yourself or hate yourself.’ And I decided to love myself. That changed a lot of things.”
—Queen Latifah

Queen Latifah got it right at 18, yet many of us still struggle with our relationship with the mirror. Especially now later in life.

Are you having a “mirror crisis”? This week we discuss how we feel about seeing ourselves in the mirror, which tells us every day we are aging.

So, what can we do about it?

There are several ways we can become more comfortable with the mirror. First and foremost, we need to feel comfortable with our age. We are as old as we are. While that is a fact, we can redefine what aging means and change our perspective. We can get older in the best ways possible for us.

Find older women we admire and take a page from their playbook. What makes them attractive interesting at their age. How are they redefining age?

Hear our perspectives and what go each of us through our own mirror crises.

Are you experiencing a mirror crisis? Maybe it’s time to listen to Queen Latifah and choose to love yourself in the mirror exactly as you are today.

#216 Books We’re Reading this Spring

#hourglassconversations #womenover50 #boomerlife

“The more that you read, the more things you will know.
The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”
―Dr. Seuss

No, we haven’t read Dr. Seuss books lately, but we do have several books you might enjoy and find interesting. We both love to read in its many forms….whether a physical book, kindle book, or audio book. Books take us places, introduce us to people, educate us, entertain us, and show us the world from a different perspective.

Books are a valuable and cherished resources in our lives. With book banning in the news, we acknowledge we should never take access to books for granted.

A few highlights of what we’ve read….

Nancy’s Books
Spare, Prince Harry
The Longevity Diet, Valter Longo, PhD
Women Talking, Miriam Toews

Nancy also loved….
Remarkably Bright Creatures, Shelby Van Pelt and The Judges List, John Grisham.

Cherryll’s Books
Frienditimacy, Shasta Nelson
Daily Creative, Todd Henry
Successful Aging, Daniel Levitin
Demon Copperhead, Barbara Kingsolver
The Thursday Murder Club, Richard Osman

So, are you a book finisher or do you quit when you don’t like it? You may be surprised by our responses.

Let us know…..
……what you’re reading and love.
……and if you’re a book finisher or quit when it doesn’t do it for you.

Back after a Long Winter

#hourglassworkshops, #womenover50

After a winter hiatus, we are back with our video conversations. We’re both feeling we have just come out from a long, gray wet season. We are so appreciative of the “superbloom” energy everywhere.

In California, we are experiencing a “superbloom”.  I’d never heard the word before this spring.

A bit of word history…..the word is from Indigenous communities in arid regions celebrating massive springtime blooming activities of wildflowers, generally with edible seeds and roots. It was a term mostly used in our southwestern deserts after an extremely rainy winter.

It is a perfect word for these days. We see it in wildflowers and suburban gardens. With friends and in our relationships. Women are reaching out to friends they haven’t seen in a while to check in and get together. People are taking trips, venturing out with a feeling of possibility and adventure.

We suggest…..

Get outside. Feel the renewing energy and enjoy nature’s colors.

Call a friend you haven’t seen lately.

Venture out, near or far. Plan a trip and go somewhere new.

Bring nature inside with a large bouquet of flowers.

Add a little “superbloom into your life!
